Pistons

in all essence, the Spurs should be done. Thanks to the Pistons getting their first win in San Antonio in eons (a must) they will have to do it again in the grand daddy of them all - GAME 7. Going into the game I must say I'm pretty optimistic about the Pistons chances to defy the odds. I mean everyone is against them. I've been reading all the lines

No team has won two road game 7's in the same playoffs
No team has won the final two games on the road after being down 3-2

and the list goes on. But I recall last year at this time, no team had ever won the middle 3 games of the Finals at home when the format was 2-3-2 as the Pistons did.
So go Pistons tomorrow! Lets hope there is something to celebrate in Detroit tomorrow night/early Friday morning

And the Tigers finally got over .500 - its about time. Cant remember them being over .500 in June in a long long time

Anyways I'm gettin sick - im still congested and my cold will not get away - Damn I hate this.
Lets hope I feel better. Anyways my schedule for the remainder of the week isn't so bad. More than likely will be up in the EARLY hours to do pages with Sean again tomorrow. At some time tomorrow I need to finish my preview for the Lenawee County All Star Bball game and make progress on my Scholar Athlete story on Scott Rupnow, who is like our scholar-athlete of the year.

Friday I'm coverin the boys bball All Star game, and Sat I have no clue what the hell I'm doin. all i know is that the Maple City Festival starts tomorrow - whatever the hell that is, but its a three day festival around downtown Adrian. might have to see what its all about at some point

Losing my NASCAR virginity

Now onto what I've been doing the entire weekend - I was out at Michigan International Speedway covering auto racing. I'm some one who has no interest in auto racing whatsoever so this created a nice little challenge for me and I think I did alight for the first time. Throughout the weekend I ran many media members which I recognized like Angelique Chengelis from the Detroit News (covers UM football) and Matt Markey from the Toledo Blade (UT sports) and got a chance to talk to both of them for a few. While talking to them, I realized both didn't have a huge interest in NASCAR.

For those who have never been to MIS, it is totally a different environment. The fans are definitely of a different breed and they LOVE their sport - BIG TIME. When leaving the race Sunday, (it took like 1 hr 45 min to travel 25 miles or so) there was fans going crazy at the campgrounds around the track honking at each other and screaming "show us your tits" among other things. They even had the beads. There was a roadside place selling used tires from the race, and sure enough people were buying them. One of the most classic things I saw though, was a five-year old boy holding a sign that show me your tits. I mean come on - lol.

On Friday I covered the ARCA race while at MIS and ended up doing a story on this chick (Erin Crocker) who is trying to make waves like Indy Racing League's Danica Patrick. Believe me though, Crocker is not nearly as hot as Danica. Saturday I covered qualifying for the Batman Begins 400 on Sunday and then the NASCAR truck race. Sunday I just did two side stories on the big race.

Surprisingly enough, while at MIS i ran into a few peeps I knew. Saturday I saw Darcy Bereznoff, who lived in my building of the village this year. Turns out she was working security at MIS all weekend so I got a chance to talk to her a few times throughout the weekend. While walking around the pits on Saturday I some girl yelled BCal but I had no idea who the hell she was so just said what up how u doin and turned around (boy did i feel stupid) but oh well. And Sunday I saw Alexis Fortner during pre-race introductions right at Victory Lane in the infield.

Speaking of the pits, that's another story itself. I had a pit pass, so during the race I was roaming around the pits watching crews change tires and just seeing what else was going on down there. It was definitely pretty cool, and man do they get a car back on the race track faster than people even get dressed. It nuts. I also had a garage pass so I could walk around the drivers/crews areas to see them hanging out before the race.

Anyways here is what i was able to come up with from the weekend
Erin Crocker
NASCAR truck race
Newman wins pole
Mark Martin
NASCAR rambling

All in all it wasnt a bad weekend, but I was pretty drained from being out there the past three days and starting to get a headache from the loud cars. For now I'm gonna go chill and actually relax

Oh and before I depart - All I have to say after watching the latter part of game five on the NBA Finals is Robert "Bleepin" Horry. How could we leave that guy wide open for a three. The Pistons face a pretty daunting task in trying to win two games down in San Antonio, but it is doable. Overall game five was a pretty good game and a lot better than the blowouts from the five other games.

At least the Tigers won in dramatic fashion though, I guess, winning 10-8 in 10 innings over the Giants after being down 8-5 in the ninth

damn rain delay

So Homer's national record streak continued yesterday. The baseball gods were again on their side - I mean how do you seriously win 74 games in a row in baseball?? I guess I saw why - lucky breaks.

In last night's game there was a 51 minute rain delay seperating the top and bottom half of the fourth inning with the Trojans down to Blissfield 3-1. Lucky enough for Homer they had plenty of time to regroup, considering the team was bickering with each other after being down. After the delay Blissfield didnt get a runner on base while Homer capitalized on a few errors to score four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

In a sense sometimes its better to be lucky than good - but there is no question Homer does have talent.

Anyways while making the hour and a half trip to Howell I got a chance to know my boss Sean better, since he rode with me up there. Here are things I found out

- He has an older sister and younger brother
- I knew he was 24 and from Monroe
- He is a big UConn basketball fan and likes Rip Hamilton
- He loves the casino
- He is taking classes at Siena Heights (one of the two colleges in Adrian)

There are a lot of other things I found out too which was pretty cool because we share some of the same interests, like same teams players and enjoy sporting events and such. I found it pretty cool that him and the news editor James got a chance to go inside Shea Stadium when they went on a weekend trip to New York and also all the ball parks hes been to. Its always been one of my dreams to go on a trip around the country to several major league stadiums

The ones I really want to hit that I havent been to are:
RFK Stadium - I gotta see my team the Nationals play, and plus I just love DC
Great American - Cincy seems like it would be a cool place to take in a game
Fenway Park - another classic ballpark, just like Wrigley Field which I totally love
PNC - Pittsburgh's ballpark - i hear its pretty nice

The ballparks I've been inside before are Comerica (obviously), Tiger Stadium, US Cellular and Wrigley. I've been right outside Jacobs Field, and driven past the Metrodome and Milwaukee's ball park (drawing a blank on the name)

Bring on Homer!

This weekend I got to cover Blissfield baseball again on their regional. They won both games beating Madison Heights Madison 6-1 in the regional semifinal and whipped up on Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 8-0 in the championship game to set up tomorrows showdown with Homer - the high school that has won a national record 73 consecutive baseball games.

I'll be at the game tomorrow, hoping that Blissfield ends Homer's run, and many others will probably be hoping that, including Gabriel Richard coach Richard Shook.

Anyways other than that not too much else going on.
After work Saturday I went to Big Boys with the News Editor James Briggs and my editor Sean. Definitely an interesting environment at the Adrian Big Boy - and our waiter had her big boy shirt on one second and came to check on us like 15 min later and had on like a club shirt. I was like um ok.

Yesterday Kimmy came to visit for a bit which was definitely great and got a chance to see Amy for a bit on Friday.

The Pistons seem to be struggling - I'm hoping they get their act together because Manu Ginobili is certainly getting on my freaking nerves.

That is all I got for now - time to go to work to write a story

bowling

So I finally checked out the bowling alley in Adrian and it was pretty tight. This post will mostly interest Jason so sorry if this is boring to anyone else reading this.

I ended up bowling three games to simulate league play and bowled a 440 series (155, 153, 132)

The first game went pretty well for me. After only hitting 1 pin on my first roll I picked up the spare and then followed with a strike. After hitting 7 pins in the third frame i marked in frames four, five and six with a spare and two strikes. In the seventh frame I got 9 pins but couldnt get the spare, bowled another strike in the eighth frame, and then hit 8 pins in both the ninth and 10th frames.

In the second game i started off pretty hot, as I marked in each of the first six frames, gettin a spare, strike, spare, spare, spare, strike. In the seventh frame I hit nine on the first roll and just missed picking up the spare. I followed with nine in the eighth frame and a spare in the ninth frame and hitting nine pins in the 10th frame.

The third game was just probably me being tired. I opened with 7 the first grame and then got a strike, but really I wasnt able to capitalize and pick anything up. I got eight in the third frame, a spare in the fourth, a strike in the fifth, nine in the sixth, spares in the seventh and eighth. Then in frame nine i hit eight pins and I got nine in the 10th frame and missed my chance for an extra roll by failing to pick up the spare.

While at the alley some black dude came up to me and started talking to me. His name was Wes and he tried to recruit me for his bowling team in the fall and just came up to talk b/c there arent many blacks around here. He was cool - a pretty good bowler and J he has a Pittsburgh Steelers bowling ball and bowling bag. He said that was his team and raved about Big Ben (Roethlisberger that is, not our Ben on the Pistons)

I also met some workers at the place and I have a feeling they will be seeing me alot and they told me to keep on coming back - they just want me money - the little I do have - LOL

Alight enough of my bowling rambling!

sports ramblings

history was made last night in Oklahoma City when the UM softball team showed that teams in the Eastern US can play softball. That was awesome to see them beat UCLA to win the College Softball World Series. I bet Corey had fun at that one

Anyways thats pretty awesome. Its been so damn hot out lately - argh - its just been sweltering. work has been so laid back and kinda dull this week because nothing is really going on. Tuesday and yesterday it was jsut Ed and I working in the office.

The tigers dealt Urbina yesterday to the Phillies for Placido Polanco - i was so surprised with the timing of the trade considering Percival just came off the DL, but I guess we need some help on offense and our bullpen has fared well thus far.

Oh and I got to do a tight story about the Major League Baseball Draft with two kids from Blissfield being draftedt two picks apart from each other in the ninth round. When talkin to my boss on the phone last night he told me he thought it turned out pretty good so that was cool.

Blissfield kids drafted

Game one of the finals tonight. This reminds me of last year when so many people were writing off Detroit like they did against the Lakers last season. Lets hope they show the world again

recent times

Hell yea to the Pistons - going to the NBA Finals again - and Eastern Conference champions two straight years! I love it!

Just to catch up on the past few days

Friday was an off day, a nice relaxing day. K visited for a brief period before goin home and then after that while I was outside sayin bye to her, I met the guy who I share a bedroom wall with and the girl that lives above me and ending up having a couple of bud lights w/ the girl above me and our landlord who is good pals with the girl who lives above me. So that was kinda cool and I found out the girl above me (lindsay) goes to EMU and wants to be a sports broadcaster.

Saturday I was out in the hot sun all day covering district baseball games at Clinton. Man was it hot and the sun was so draining. Blissfield won the district I was covering, which was totally expected.

Blissfield baseball story

While in between baseball games I caught some of the 12 inning marathon of a softball game between Clinton and Ida which Clinton won 1-0. Man was it exciting.
On Sat I ended up working until about 9:3o and was bored after that so I just saw the end of the Pistons game and tried to find sumpin to do before crashin

Funny thing bout me being at work Sunday and one of my coworkers had called the Detroit News to find the winner of a district. After he found out what he needed he passed the phone over to me and told me someone wanted to talk to me - i was confused but when I picked up it was Art on the other line asking how I was doing and about the job. Gotta love when you talk to your mentor and someone who has helped you out so much.

I hung out with K Sunday for a bit and went bowling w/ her and her lil sister from Big Brother Big Sister. I didnt bring my ball but used a house ball and bowled my first turkey ever (J i almost text'd u to tell you of my feat). I prolly hadnt bowled since like April 20th or sumpin like that so I was impressed with the 145 I bowled and I had a 115 going into the 10th frame before our hour expired. And I had K beat in both games. =)
I also sawRobers on my way home as we met up and ate Wendys.
Also while I was wiht K i met her sister and then we walked around the Taste of Ann Arbor and stopped at this little restaurant in downtown for a quick snack

Yesterday I went home to get a new cell! Its pretty tight, its got internet and I can dl ringtones. I left at 7:45 am and got back at about 2:45. While I was home I swung by my house to pick up a few things and stopped to see my mom at work.

I chilled a bit and then went into work at 6:30 for a little bit to work on my baseball regional preview for Thursdays paper. No one was in the office from sports and it was a very slow night. I did however take a phone call - turned out to be Mark Heller at the AA News - asking about who won a certain district that we covered

I think thats all I needed to write for now - more to come

soccer

So yesterday I was out in Jackson/Parma covering a HS district soccer game and sure enough I ran into a familiar face. I saw Joe Hayes, a reporter I worked with at the Echo who was covering the game for the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

I knew he had worked at the paper and saw one of his soccer stories in the week so I had a feeling he might be out there and sure enough he was. So it was cool to talk with him throughout the first half and talk bout journalism, jobs, and EMU sports.

The team I was covering (Tecumseh) ended up losing 3-0 but it was closer than the score. Watching made me miss playing soccer so much and remembering my days as a high school soccer player. Boy did I wish I was out there playing and putting some moves on people.

reviewing the day

Today (well yesterday now) started out interesting for me

I woke up to a call from my editor Sean at 7:45 am wondering if I could come in ASAP because my headshot pic for my column was misplaced and they needed it so the page could be complete.
So that was an interesting start - so I hurried up and put my dress shirt on with a tie and some jeans and got on over to work. After that since I was up and out I headed to pick up a newspaper at Meijer and got a chocolate cake

And here is my column for those who were curious to see: DTII column

Anyways I chilled at the apartment for most of the day and went into work at 6. It was boring for the first two hours, because no calls came in. I did meet one of the staff writers for sports that I hadn't met yet and he was cool and I talked to him for a few

Things didnt actually pick up until 9 when I got a call from the Tecumseh lacrosse coach. After doing the write up on that I ended up doing some work with the baseball and softball leaderboards for our preps page in Thursday's paper.

And while I'm on the topic of sports related things at the paper, one of the things we have at the top of our sports page on a daily basis is a thing called on the lighter side and it just provides some kind of unique tidbit of something in the news. One that stood out to me last week was a quote of Shaq's that I thoroughly enjoyed.

"At this point in my career, I'm done with trying to achieve individual accolades. They mean nothing. When I was younger I tried to get it. I tried to get them all. ... But that doesnt mean anything. ...Nash had a great year. Now, if it was voted on by some legends or some players, you know it would concern me. But it's voted on by earthlings. Earthlings make mistakes." - Shaq in response to if not getting the NBA's MVP award bothered him

Anyways i should be trying to hit the bed soon here - and btw K, the fish got fed!

DTII

So today was the big Daily TelegramIndividual Invitational (DTII) track meet at Adrian High. A pretty exciting event, and not as bad as i thought it would be. Very hot with the sun out and little wind at first but it gradually cooled off.

I was assigned to do a column on the meet and luckily something good jumped out at me when this kid who was seeded sixth in the 110 hurdles turned in his best performance and won the event. So he was the main focus of my column along with a freshman runner from Britton-Deerfield who has broken the school record in the 800 three times and broke the school record she set by five seconds at the meet.

Anyone who knows me well knows I hate writing columns - i lack the creativity of a Mitch Albom or even the L. I wish I could be that creative but thats just me - hopefully I'll get better at it with time - shit maybe i'll practice by writing columns on stuff relating to the Pistons or other professional teams.

And speaking of the Pistons, my team evened up the series with Miami at 2. Its too bad I didn't get to see any of it since I was at work, but the A kept me posted as well as a guy at work who had the sportsline update going. I was surprised we were up by 17 at one point in the fourth quarter

And by the way, here is a story that ran today online, but was actually in Thursdays print edition. Our website got a facelift - looks a lot better now

http://lenconnect.com/articles/2005/05/31/sports/sports02.txt

And speaking of work again, it seems like it will be kinda a busy week. Tomorrow (well today now) I'm working on the desk, Thursday I'm covering the Tecumseh soccer game out in Jackson, Friday i'm off and Saturday I'm covering the Division 3 baseball district at Clinton.
